TABC Cancels Permit of McAllen Bar Following Rape Allegations

AUSTIN – A McAllen bar has lost its license to sell alcohol following allegations that an 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on the premises.

IZK LLC, doing business as G.O.A.T. & Culture nightclub, 117 South 17th Street in McAllen, agreed to cancel its permit January 17 following an investigation by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The investigation was prompted when an 18-year-old victim alleged that she was sexually assaulted in the club by two men. One person has been arrested by local police in connection with the crime.

TABC Executive Director Bentley Nettles said the case illustrates every alcohol retailer's duty to prevent similar assaults from occurring at their place of business.

"When a retailer is issued their license to sell alcohol, they agree to uphold a basic level of safety for their customers and employees," Nettles said. "This includes taking steps to prevent sexual assaults. TABC is committed to providing the tools and training retailers need to help keep their businesses safe and prevent tragic incidents such as this. Any retailer or employee can contact their local TABC office to request free educational materials or training. We are proud to work with our alcoholic beverage industry partners to help keep Texas safe."

The owners of the club are barred from getting a TABC license or permit for three years and may not work in any capacity for any business located at G.O.A.T's current address.

The case remains under investigation by TABC and local police.
