TABC Working with Local Alcohol Retailers to Increase Agent Presence Near Downtown Austin, UT Campus

AUSTIN – The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission will work with local retailers to provide an enhanced presence as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to increase public safety in downtown Austin and near the University of Texas campus.

The move is part of TABC’s longstanding "Cops in Shops" program and will initially run Jan. 16-18. During that period, retailers can request an undercover TABC agent be stationed at their business to help prevent illegal or violent activity on the premises. The agency will also have visible patrols in the operation area throughout the weekend.

Agents will only be stationed at businesses which request their presence, according to TABC Executive Director Bentley Nettles.

"One of the reasons this program has been so effective in the past is because we’re working directly with alcohol retailers to promote public safety," Nettles said. "Here in Austin and across Texas, retailers understand the important role they play in keeping their customers and the public safe. We’re proud to work with our partners in the alcoholic beverage industry to promote a safer Texas for all."

Earlier this week, TABC auditors met with business owners in the area to determine if they wanted to participate in the program, Nettles said.

"In this case, the goal is to help alcohol retailers maintain safety at their business," he said. "We’ll also work with employers and staff members to educate them on best practices when it comes to avoiding violent incidents at a licensed location."

TABC is the state agency that regulates all phases of the alcoholic beverage industry in Texas. The agency is focused on helping businesses be successful and protecting Texas communities.
