FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 28, 2007
During early March, TABC agents statewide will conduct minor stings along the I-35 corridor and other major arteries leading to the Coast, including I-37, I-45, US Highway 59 and US Highway 77. Under the close supervision of TABC enforcement agents, young people who are obviously underage will be going into retail establishments and attempting to buy alcoholic beverages.
“This is the second year that the agency has held a statewide minor sting corresponding with Spring Break,” said Administrator Alan Steen. “Last year, agents visited 368 retail locations in 22 counties across the state. Compliance ranged from a disappointing 78% in the Houston area, to a promising 88% in the Dallas/Ft. Worth region, with an 85% compliance rate overall. We hope to increase the number of locations visited, as well as the number of clerks who refuse to sell to our minors. We consider it a success when the clerks refuse the sale.”
“As we did last year, we are trying to get the word out to the retailers to train their employees to follow the law. We want them to know that our undercover agents will be in their stores with teenagers who are trying to buy alcohol. And it is in everyone's best interest for their employees to refuse to sell alcoholic beverages to anyone who may be under 21.”
A store employee who sells alcohol to a minor faces criminal charges for a Class A Misdemeanor, resulting in a fine up to $4,000, up to a year in jail, or both. Furthermore, the licensed entity faces administrative charges that could result in a fine, suspension, or cancellation of their permit.
“Ensuring that access to alcoholic beverages is limited only to those of legal drinking age is our first step to ensure Texas is a safe place. I am asking retailers and their employees, college students and their parents, and anyone else who has the opportunity to make a difference, to do their part as well,” said Alan Steen.
